Meet Nicholas Omondi, also affectionately known as Akei in Murende Village, Busia County. Akei is a visionary young man who has embarked on a remarkable journey to bring internet access and sustainable energy to his community. His story is a testament to the power of determination, resourcefulness, and a deep commitment to making a positive impact.

Growing up in Matayos, Akei witnessed firsthand the connectivity challenges ravaging his village. Despite government initiatives like the “Last Mile Project” aimed at lighting up rural areas, his community still lacks access to essential amenities such as electricity and the internet. Akei’s personal experiences of studying by the dim light of tin lamps, which not only strained his eyes but also posed risks to his respiratory health, fueled his determination to effect change.

As he grew up, Akei dedicated himself to acquiring the technical skills needed for an ambitious project that would deliver his village not only from darkness, but also a lack of internet connectivity. He invested in a solar panel to harness the abundant sunlight in Busia County, and with unwavering resolve, he set up an internet booster. To ensure uninterrupted internet service, he ingeniously integrated a wind turbine to generate electricity, complementing the solar energy stored in batteries he had also procured. A generous elder in the community contributed a vital piece of land, situated on the slopes of the hilly Murende Village — perfectly situated to capture the wind’s energy.

The project came to life, bringing the gift of internet access to nearby homes. This initiative proved invaluable for college students who can now access the internet for their studies, free of charge. It also serves as an information hub for neighboring communities, providing vital insights on agriculture, market trends, and more.

Recent challenges

In recent times, Akei has faced challenges like a broken wind turbine, but he remains undeterred. He dreams of expanding his project by acquiring a more efficient wind turbine, increasing the number of solar panels, and investing in additional batteries. Such an expansion promises not only to enhance internet connectivity but also to provide a reliable and efficient source of renewable power to the surrounding village.

The hills in Busia county are now attracting hikers and adventurers, which has also given Akei a new dimension in investment. He feels these hills can be packaged as serious destinations for domestic tourists.

Shining example

However, Akei’s vision for a more connected and empowered community hinges on the support of generous individuals and organizations. This inspiring local initiative is a shining example of how one person’s determination can address a pressing local issue, ultimately improving the lives of those in need.

Join us in supporting Akei’s dream of a better-connected, sustainable Murende Village and even Busia County and beyond. Together, we can help him scale up his project, making lasting positive changes.
